MOL Logistics Develops Logistics Network in Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS)

April 18, 2012

With changes in the business environment including rising wages and labor shortages in major Asian economies such as China, Thailand, and Vietnam, Japanese companies quickly turned their attention to the Mekong region. MOL Logistics (Japan) has opened new office in Cambodia and agent in Myanmar, which will complement subsidiaries already established in Vietnam and Thailand, to develop logistics networks beyond national borders in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS). The expanded network will meet diversified logistics needs and support customers’ supply chains.

The company has opened the Logistics Division in the subsidiary of Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) in MOL (Cambodia) Co., Ltd. (MOLCM) and started its operation in April. The new office will maximize synergy with MOL and MOL Logistics’ overseas networks including subsidiaries in Vietnam and Thailand, and develop air, sea, and land forwarding and logistics businesses ahead of other companies.

MOLCM was established in January 2007, and is engaged in liner agency and ocean consolidation business (OCB). It is the only Japanese company in Cambodia independently serving these sectors.

Electronics, automobile, and apparel manufacturers are planning to move their plants or construct additional facilities in Cambodia, which is located between Thailand and Vietnam. There is a move to build mutually complementary production systems among Japanese companies that are advancing into Cambodia. The MOL Logistics Cambodia office offers one-stop air/sea/multimodal transport in and out of Cambodia to support customers’ production systems and logistics operations. It will also provide trucking service using the South Economic Corridor and other logistics services such as non resident inventory for items produced in Cambodia at its offices such in Thailand, Vietnam, and Singapore. Backed by extensive skills and experience, MOL Logistics will help companies build, move, and expand production facilities in Cambodia.

  • 2.  Myanmar

MOL Logistics launched a new business serving as MOL’s sole liner agency in Myanmar, EFR GLink Express Services Ltd., in January 2012. Myanmar has been showing steady progress toward democracy and economic sanctions are likely to be lifted, stimulating the business environment. It has an abundant work force, second only to Thailand in Southeast Asia. Industrial parks have been developed around Yangon, the nation’s largest city Yangon, and many apparel companies including Japanese have moved in the parks to establish sewing plants, which require logistics connections to Japan, the United States, and other markets.

Most of Myanmar’s export products are transported by sea, but there is strong demand for air transport for sample products and emergency shipment, so MOL Logistics has stepped up its transport services with sea/air/multimodal transport in and out of the country. The company will also offer trucking service using the East-West Economic Corridor in cooperation with subsidiaries in Vietnam and Thailand, and non-resident inventory service in Singapore for products transported by sea from Yangon to Singapore.
