Collective Group Support for Transporting MOL’s Wind-Assisted Propulsion System “Wind Challenger”
- Industry
- Heavy-Weight Cargo
- Segment
- Ocean Transport
To install Wind Challenger, the wind-assisted propulsion system developed by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, onto a newly built LNG carrier, ocean transportation was carried out from Nagasaki to South Korea.
To ensure safe and proper delivery, the MOL Group provided a one-stop transportation solution by leveraging its comprehensive group capabilities. In this project, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, MOL Drybulk, and MOL Logistics worked together to successfully execute this highly challenging marine transportation project.
Role of MOL Logistics
MOL Logistics was responsible for the forwarding operations essential to ensuring safe marine transportation, including transportation planning and coordination with all related parties.
Specifically, we managed the entire project from end to end, including organizing transportation requirements, developing optimal transport plans, coordinating procedures and operations with the shipper and partner companies involved in each stage, managing transportation schedules, and providing on-site supervision.

Scope of Work
Preliminary Survey & Coordination
Prior to shipment, feasibility studies and coordination were conducted to confirm whether cargo handling operations could be carried out at the facilities in Nagasaki Port, including assessments of alternative ports if necessary.
On the day before loading, detailed operational meetings were held among the stevedoring companies, onboard cargo handling operators, MOL Drybulk, and MOL Logistics to ensure smooth execution of the operations.

Waterfront Handling Operations

After the cargo transported by barge from the factory arrived at the quay, waterfront lifting operations were carried out to move the cargo onto land.
To prevent any damage during the operation, specialists and on-site teams closely coordinated in advance to carefully examine lifting points and handling equipment.

Cargo Loading Operations (Ship Hold)

In this project, cargo was loaded both inside the ship hold and on deck. Operations began with loading inside the hold, and the stowage plan was carefully coordinated in advance.
For cargo securing, lashing strength was calculated beforehand to withstand wave-induced motion during the voyage. Throughout the operation, work was carried out with the utmost care to prevent any damage to the cargo.

Cargo Loading Operations (On Deck)

Parts of the sails for the Wind Challenger were loaded onto the deck.
To ensure safe and proper lifting operations, dedicated spreader beams were prepared and used in advance, allowing the components to be carefully positioned onboard. After loading, the cargo was securely lashed to withstand movement during the voyage.

Cargo handling after arrival in Korea

The cargo departed from Nagasaki Port and arrived at Gamcheon Port in Korea. Our staff were also present on site to receive the vessel upon arrival.
On the Korean side, cargo handling operations were carried out using two large cranes, and detailed coordination meetings were held with the local operators prior to the work.
The cargo was then loaded onto transporters, and the operation was completed safely and successfully without any damage.
