MOL Logistics Co., Ltd.
TOKYO—MOL Logistics Co., Ltd. (MLG; President and CEO: Osamu Sakurada; Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) today announced its participation in the new “Blue Action Net-Zero Alliance” program launched by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL; President & CEO: Takeshi Hashimoto; Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo) to contribute to the Scope 3 reduction for customers who use marine transport. MLG, as an MOL Group company, is engaged in enhancing low-carbon marine transport services using alternative fuels in cooperation with stakeholders involved in marine transport with the aim of achieving net-zero emissions.
In February 2024, MOL became the first shipping company in the Asia-Pacific region to make the environmental attributes of low-carbon voyages using alternative fuels (Note 1) tradable as digital certificates on a platform built in collaboration with the Dutch startup 123Carbon B.V. (Note 2).
Since then, MOL has established a system that can ensure operations from implementing low-carbon voyages using alternative fuels in the MOL Group-operated fleet to issuing digital certificates and allotting them to customers, and MLG is now able to allot MOL-issued digital certificates to MLG customers using the same platform.
[This program will accelerate the realization of net-zero ocean transport services]
- The digital certificates traded with customers under the program contain environmental attributes (including GHG emission reduction data quantified in units of t-CO2e and details of the relevant low-carbon voyage) to be assigned to the customer for details of the relevant low-carbon voyage undertaken by the MOL Group-operated fleet.
- The customer that has been allotted a digital certificate can reflect its activities for Scope 3 reduction from ocean transport services in its integrated reports, etc., based on the description in the digital certificate.
- Digital certificates are traded on a book-and-claim basis. This allows for flexible trading depending on customers’ Scop3 reduction targets and budget, regardless of whether or not they are physically involved in the low-carbon voyage being traded.
- The MOL Group will procure alternative fuels by funding from the sale of digital certificates, and replace the fuel used for voyages with alternative fuels.

In the “MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2,” the MOL Group has identified “building business models that enables net-zero emissions” as one of the actions to achieve net-zero GHG emissions. The launch of this program is one of the specific examples of such initiatives, and the group will continue to pursue initiatives that contribute to reducing GHG emissions, aiming to realize a decarbonized society together with customers.
